ChatGPT vs Gemini (2026): Tested, Plans and Work Fit

Updated 10 min readHow we test
TL;DR

Short answer: Gemini is worth considering if bundled storage and a lower paid entry price matter; ChatGPT offers a different price ladder, including a Pro option with exclusive Ultrafast access. This comparison uses official documentation for plans and models: GPT-6 Astra and Gemini 4 Argon have both been through our test bench, but under different judges, so their scores do not rank one above the other.

Prices here are US list prices in USD, excluding tax; readers in the UK, Australia and India should check local prices, taxes and rules before buying.

What does each plan cost, and what do you get?

ChatGPT’s verified paid plans start with Go at $8 per month; Gemini’s start with Google AI Plus at $4.99 per month and include storage. Their similarly priced middle tiers do not establish equivalent capabilities or usage allowances.

Prices and plans checked 2026-10-19 on the vendors’ official pages. US list prices in USD, excluding tax.

Gemini’s entry plan costs less and includes 400 GB. That bundle may matter if storage is already an expense, but check whether it suits your files and arrangements before treating it as a saving.

Google AI Pro and ChatGPT Plus are close in monthly price. Google’s plan lists model access explicitly; we have not verified which model each ChatGPT plan uses by default in Chat. Do not infer that mapping from the subscription price.

At the premium level, distinguish ChatGPT’s Ultrafast condition from Google’s published usage multiples. Neither tells us which tool will produce a more reliable client document.

For team purchasing, get current Business or Enterprise pricing directly from OpenAI. The ChatGPT overview for professionals and Gemini overview for professionals provide separate product guides.

Which models are current on each side?

The verified lineup includes API models, Chat models and models used in Work or Codex. These are different access contexts, so an API listing does not establish availability in a consumer subscription.

Model lineup and API prices checked 2026-10-19 on official pages. MTok means million tokens; API prices are separate from monthly subscriptions.

OpenAI’s system card says GPT-6 is launching across free and paid ChatGPT plans, replacing the older GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna. It does not establish a default-model split between plans. GPT-5.5 was retired from ChatGPT-signed-in Codex/Work on 2026-10-14; its API was unaffected.

Google lists Gemini 4 Argon under AI Pro, while describing app access as rolling out to AI Pro and Ultra. Check availability before subscribing for that model specifically. The generic Flash and Flash-Lite subscription labels should not be treated as exact version assignments.

For API budgeting, note Argon’s scheduled price change. These prices measure charges, not output quality.

Which one fits which kind of work?

Choose by documented storage, model access and monthly cost, then try your actual task with nonconfidential material. Our bench results for Gemini 4 Argon and GPT-6 Astra were graded by different judges, so they do not support a quality winner.

Gemini deserves consideration when:

  • Storage is part of the purchase. An event planner comparing plans for venue photos and floor plans can weigh the documented storage alongside model access. Included storage does not establish permission to upload confidential contracts.
  • You want a lower paid entry price. Google AI Plus offers Flash access and 400 GB at $4.99 per month.
  • You specifically want Gemini 4 Argon app access. Google AI Pro lists it at $19.99 per month, subject to the rollout qualification.

ChatGPT deserves consideration when:

  • You need Ultrafast specifically. Its verified subscription condition is Pro at $500 per month; do not assume it comes with cheaper Pro options.
  • You are evaluating named business seats. Business standard and premium seats are documented, although their prices are not verified here. This does not establish a confidentiality advantage.
  • Your workflow involves Work/Codex and API access. GPT-6.1 Sol and the September GPT-6 Luna appear in both contexts. This overlap does not mean an app subscription includes API usage.

What did our test round actually show?

Our test measured adherence to predefined criteria, not ChatGPT versus Gemini as apps. Gemini 4 Argon was added on 2026-10-20, but it was graded by a different judge than GPT-6 Astra, so the results cannot support a head-to-head recommendation.

Tests dated 2026-10-19 used a command-line API harness with tools, web and memory off, not consumer apps; app results may differ. The judges were not equally strict, so part of the Claude-versus-GPT gap comes from grading rather than the models.

With those caveats, GPT-6 Astra passed 99% of rubric criteria in round 1, with 114 of 120 runs meeting every criterion. English and Spanish prompts each averaged 99%. In round 2, French and Brazilian Portuguese prompts averaged 98%, with 110 of 120 runs meeting every criterion. Gemini 4 Argon, added on 2026-10-20 with the same prompts and rubrics and judged by gpt-6-astra, passed 91% of criteria in round 1 (75 of 120 runs meeting every criterion) and 80% in round 2 (36 of 120); it ran through Google’s Antigravity CLI with a tool-less agent, not the Gemini app, so app results may differ.

Round 1 used 40 prompts, comprising 30 English and 10 Spanish, across 10 professions. Each prompt had 5 pre-written criteria and 3 runs per model, totaling 360 runs. Round 2 used 20 French and 20 Brazilian Portuguese prompts with the same design and another 360 runs.

The models were Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5 and GPT-6 Astra. Claude outputs were judged by gpt-6-astra; GPT outputs by claude-opus-5-5. Claude Fable 5.1, added on 2026-10-20 on the same 80 prompts using the same API harness and rubrics, passed 90% of criteria in round 1 and 78% in round 2, with gpt-6-astra judging both Fable and Gemini 4 Argon.

The API-harness calibration also exposed judge asymmetry:

  • Round 1: 30 sampled Claude outputs passed 93% under the published judge and 98% under the alternate judge. For 30 sampled GPT outputs, both judges passed 97%.
  • Round 2: 10 sampled Claude outputs passed 74% under the published judge and 86% under the alternate judge. For 10 sampled GPT outputs, both passed 98%.
  • An editor agent, not a human, independently reread verdicts before seeing the judge’s decision. It agreed with 18 of 20 in round 1 and 9 of 10 in round 2.

These are command-line test results, not app results, and the unequal judges prevent an overall “better model” conclusion. Most lost criteria involved added content; word limits also cost the Claude models points.

Read the methodology and the test-round report for context. “Tested” here means at least 2 completed, graded runs, not professional sign-off.

How should you handle client data on either tool?

We have not verified either vendor’s data terms for this page. That includes retention, training on inputs and business or enterprise protections; a paid subscription is not evidence of permission to share confidential information.

Before pasting client, patient, tenant or employee information:

  • Read the exact plan’s data and privacy terms.
  • Check professional confidentiality rules, client agreements and any NDA.
  • Remove names, addresses, account details and other identifying information. Removing names alone does not establish that sharing is appropriate.
  • For business purchasing, request the applicable terms from the vendor in writing and keep them for review.

Limits: This comparison reflects published plans and models checked 2026-10-19 and command-line testing of GPT-6 Astra and Gemini 4 Argon. It is not legal, medical, tax or financial advice. A suitably licensed professional in your jurisdiction must check regulated advice, confidentiality obligations and whether a proposed use meets applicable rules and client agreements.

FAQ

Is Gemini cheaper than ChatGPT?

At the entry paid tier, Google AI Plus is $4.99 per month versus ChatGPT Go at $8. Google AI Pro is $19.99 per month versus ChatGPT Plus at $20. These are US list prices excluding tax, checked 2026-10-19. The plans include different features, so price alone does not establish equivalent value.

Which model does the free ChatGPT plan use?

OpenAI’s system card published 2026-10-07 says GPT-6 is launching across free and paid ChatGPT plans. The October Chat lineup includes GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, replacing older versions. We have not verified which model each plan uses by default. Do not confuse the Chat lineup with September models documented for Work and Codex.

Did you test Gemini against ChatGPT?

We tested Gemini 4 Argon on the same 80 profession prompts as GPT-6 Astra, adding it on 2026-10-20; Gemini passed 91% of criteria in round 1 and 80% in round 2, but different judges prevent a direct raw-score ranking against GPT. Gemini ran through Google’s Antigravity CLI with a tool-less agent and GPT through a command-line API harness with tools, web and memory off, not consumer apps, so app results may differ.

Does Google AI Pro include Gemini 4 Argon?

Google’s subscriptions page, checked 2026-10-19, lists Gemini 4 Argon alongside Pro and Flash models in Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month. Argon became generally available in the API on 2026-10-13 and is rolling out in the app to AI Pro and Ultra. Check availability before paying specifically for it.
